Kev’s Cross Report (
Round 12 Footscray Meadows Sun 27th Dec 09)

After last weeks race at an icy Herne Hill it was great to return to good old slippy

mud. The snow and ice had all but disappeared and temperatures were thankfully

well above zero. Today’s starters were Paul A, Jel U, Steve B, Andy D and yours

truly. Footscray Meadows is one of the oldest, and longest cross circuits on the

calendar (laps 10min +) and, as the organisers Gemini stated, it was ‘a splendid test

of who consumed the most mince pies’ over the Christmas period.

From the off it was obvious that Paul had consumed the least amount of pies over

the Xmas break. He quickly moved into the lead and gained a slim advantage over

Steve in the first couple of laps as the usual carnage ensued i.e. 100 + riders all

trying to occupy the same space. Unusually for me I managed to keep in touch with

the pair of them although they had a lead of 25m or so.

The next couple of laps saw Paul open up a small gap on Steve, and me catch and

pass Steve. After approx 45 mins of hard slog from all of us I’d managed to catch and

latch onto Pauls back wheel. He knew where I was likely to try and pass him and was

up out of the saddle at every opportunity to defend the Seeds lead! With approx 10

mins to go Steve had reduced the deficit and was now making ground on the pair of

us; rather ominously I clocked Jel on an out and back section approx a minute or so

back.

With 400m to go to the end of the penultimate lap, (the last lap bell was ringing), the

three leaders came hurtling past us already sprinting for the line; this effectively

meant that we now only had 400m to go to the finish line. Paul was up out of the

saddle again and maintained his race long lead to take Seeds top honours with me a

close second and Steve a few second behind in third. Jel was next in followed by a

smiling Andy who seems to be enjoying his foray into the world of cross.

Unfortunately the official results are currently screwed up for me Paul and Steve,

probably something to do with the fact that we were caught on the line by the

leaders. Out of 100 + finishers the Seeds positions are quoted as follows: -

42 Gel Utting – Seeds V

68 Andy Dumbleton Seeds S

90 Paul Atkinson Seeds V

92 Kevin Perkins Seeds V

93 Steve Blackmore Seeds V

We have, of course, lodged and official complaint and await a return to our rightful

positions in the 30’s : )

We had fantastic support at this race being so close to home. Thanks to Ali, (and her

soup kitchen), Karen, Jane & Joseph and all the others who turned up to give vocal

encouragement.

Slow Kev’s Cross Report (Herne Hill Sun 20th Dec 09)
Today’s starters were Paul A, Steve B, Andy D and yours truly, with Ali and Joseph
providing vocal support.
Despite it being a sunny day the recent frozen weather meant that any part of Herne
Hill that was still in the shade was frozen solid. Unfortunately his accounted for a
good 50% of the course! The organisers had coned off the worst bits and gritted
other patches but there’s only so much you can do.
The start line marshal’s last words of wisdom were ‘watch out it is treacherous round
the back’. We already knew this. Our practice lap had been eventful to put it mildly.
Paul had been over his handlebars and the rest of us had only just managed to stay
upright.
Right from the start Steve’s silky smooth style propelled him into the lead. That was
the last I saw of him! Similarly Paul came past me approx half way through the first
lap and pulled away. God it was slippery. Conditions were such that where the sun
had warmed the course you’d be riding through gloopy mud one minute then sheet
ice, on wet tyres, the next.
People all around me were falling off their bikes. Front/back wheels would just let go
without warning dumping riders all over the place. I’ve never seen so many people on
their arses. After approx 45 mins of slithering round the course I hit the deck hard for
the fourth time. This wasn’t fun! I stopped and let most of the air out of my tyres
which helped and soldiered on to the finish where I met the others. Nobody had
managed to stay upright for the whole race, most of us coming off at least 3 or 4
times.
Out of 112 starters finish positions were as follows: -
Steve 46th 1:01:08, 8 laps completed
Paul 61st 57:26, 7 laps completed
Kev 74th 1:00:53, 7 laps completed
Andy 80th 1:03:52 7 laps completed
Well done to all who finished. In all honesty this race should have been cancelled; it
was a miracle that no serious accidents occurred. I won’t be complaining about slippy
mud again!

Kev’s Blistering De Laune CC Cross Report.

(Herne Hill Sat 05 Dec 09)

The London X League is having a break at present due to various regional races taking place, (see everything London X here including video’s photo’s, results, races etc www.londonxleague.net/ ). As a result the Seeds X’ers, (Me Paul & Steve), took on this one off Sat race at our old favourite Herne Hill in Dulwich. The course here is centred around the famous old velodrome that was built for the 1948 Olympics; it’s still used today, (see website here HYPERLINK www.hernehillvelodrome.com/about    www.hernehillvelodrome.com/about  although the facilities are somewhat dilapidated.

What with all the rain we’ve had over the last few weeks the course was pretty muddy but not too bad. The field of 41 odd Senior and Vet riders were called to the start line at 1:45 p.m. for the hour long onslaught.

To say the three of us are competitive could be construed as a bit of an understatement. Added to this is the fact that when we’re all on form there’s nothing to choose between the three of us. This race turned out to be the closest, most fiercely contested, incident filled battle any of us can remember.

I must add that it’s difficult trying to write a race report when you’re only seeing it from your ‘in the race’ perspective so please bear with me. Here’s a shortened version of how things panned out:-

Right from the off Paul & Steve shoot off leaving me for dead. They seem to be pretty much together and lead me by approx 45+ sec’s at one point.
I manage to haul them back by approx lap 5. All 3 of us together now, all flat out! Positions S, P, K.
Steve’s chain comes off but he remounts, positions P K S.
I get past Paul on the start finish straight, positions K P S.
I go over handlebars but remount after one of the leaders’ forces me into a ditch. Positions P K S (I think).
Paul’s chain comes off approx a lap & a half from the finish whilst leading but he remounts. Positions K S P.
I’m leading but Steve’s catching me. Aagh!
I manage to hold Steve off until we hit the finish line. Paul is still having problems with his chain and finishes a few seconds adrift, 16th, 17th and 20th positions respectively. Blimey that was intense!

Cheers to today’s super supporters Ali and Joseph who created the usual din.

‘Blistering’ Kev’s Cross Report, (too snotted up to compete)
London X League Round 9 Penshurst Sun 22 Nov 09

Today’s race took place at the popular Penshurst Off-Road Centre in the depths of Kent. Driving down to the venue was almost as delightful as the race itself; it bucketed it down. No wonder then that this tough, hilly, course resembled a quagmire although it did, at least, brighten up for the start.

From the gun it was Steve who led the Seeds trio; he stayed there until the inevitable ‘mechanicals’ started about 20 mins in. This course is an absolute killer of bikes when in this condition no matter how well you set them up before hand.

Both Jel and Paul got in front of Steve, within a lap. After resolving his chain problem, Steve got back into contention with Paul who was riding well. The two of them had a bit of a ding dong until Paul succumbed to mechanical problems of his own, (the dreaded chain suck). This severely hampered his progress and left Steve chasing Jel, who by now was out in front enjoying his winning lead…….or was it.

Slowly but surely over the next 30 min’s the gap between Steve and Jel started to come down. Such is the nature of twisty cyclocross Slowly but surely over the next 30 minutes, the gap between Steve and Jel started to come down. Such is the nature of twisty cyclo cross courses that you can routinely observe your close opponents either getting further away, (relief), or conversely catching you up, (oh sh*t).
Steve chasing hard
Jel saw Steve coming, (oh sh*t), and started to push hard to defend his lead. This made last 10 minutes somewhat unpleasant for Jel.

Steve had the bit between his teeth now and was pushing equally hard. He finally caught Jel approx 400 m from the finish line and went on to take Seeds top honours by meters. As per usual there wasn’t much between any of them come the line with Paul seconds adrift.

What more could you ask for, mud, a tough tricky course…….. mud……….. a severe workout like no other and…….did I mention mud.

ps It was remiss of me not to mention the super supporters wot lined the course. Little do they realise what a difference they make, and I’m not just talking about the cake & soup that turns up at the end of the race!
