Dunton 19th June.

Mark Obrien has been training hard since his debut ride at Dunton. He has increased his mileage and speed and has been working on his hill climbing technique. All to his favour after a storming second performance at Dunton. Mark managed to keep with the pack for the 1 hour duration, with average speeds of 23 mph. Mark managed to sit in six or so off the front and was in a great position on each of the prize laps. With his confidence growing he made his way up to the front on the final lap, with finishing speeds on the sprint of 38 mph, Mark only losing out after being pushed to the edge of the road, eventually finishing in 12th place.

Report on Dunton Cycle Race 5/6/2008

On a sunny but windy evening, I was the only representative from Seeds Cycling Club. There were approx 45 riders this evening. A briefing on the start line by Geoff Bores (Race Organiser) reiterating on the importance of not crossing the white line in the centre of the track, as this had happened in the race two weeks previously. I was quite optimistic of a repeat performance of keeping with the leading group for the duration of the race like two weeks previously. The race got underway with me starting in the middle of the pack. The first climb on the first lap and I found myself near to the front. The fast downhill straight I was able to hit over 38 mph and I was in the lead. The wind resistance was very strong. I could see that the group were using me as a wind break. I managed to hold the lead for half a lap then one by one the group passed me. I managed to hang on to the group and catch my breath. I kept pace for 25 minutes then a massive injection of pace from the leading group along the fast downhill straight and the gap was opened. I found myself with two other riders and we tried to hold the gap for as long as possible. The leading group gradually pulling further away and the effort required seemed far greater than the race two weeks earlier. After approx 45 minutes the leading group had kicked out more riders out the back and almost instantly riders were dotted all over the track. I managed to catch up and pass two riders towards the end of the race. The leading group eventually lapped us on what was the penultimate lap and I managed to slot in and finish with the group. The race had two sprint laps which are called preams. The race also saw four retirements. The only controversial incident in the race was a rider who crossed the white line along the main straight and nearly caused a head on collision with a rider coming the other way. The next race two weeks away and will try again.
